Family sponsorship in Canada is a program that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their family members to come and live in Canada as permanent residents. This program is designed to help reunite families and enable close relatives to live together in Canada. Here’s a comprehensive overview of family sponsorship in Canada:
Eligible Family Members:
- The following family members can be sponsored through family sponsorship in Canada:
- Spouses, common-law partners, or conjugal partners.
- Dependent children, including adopted children.
- Parents and grandparents.
- Certain relatives such as orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild.
Financial Responsibility and Undertakings:
Sponsors are required to demonstrate their financial ability in most cases to support the sponsored family members and ensure they do not rely on social assistance from the government. Income requirements vary depending on the number of family members being sponsored.Sponsors may have to sign an undertaking committing to provide financial support for their family members.
Appeals and Rejections:
If a sponsorship application is rejected, sponsors and sponsored family members may have the option to appeal the decision to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB).
Spousal Sponsorship (In-Canada and Out-of-Canada Sponsorship):
Family sponsorship can be done from within Canada (in-Canada sponsorship) or from outside Canada (out-of-Canada sponsorship). The eligibility requirements and processes may differ for these two options.
Types of Spousal Sponsorship:
- There are two main types of spousal sponsorship applications in Canada:
- In-Canada Spousal Sponsorship: This option is for spouses or common-law partners who are already living in Canada. They can apply for permanent residency from within Canada.
- Out-of-Canada Spousal Sponsorship: This option is for spouses or common-law partners who are living outside Canada. The sponsored person applies for permanent residency from their home country.
